Hard Truths – Our Limitations
No Mobile Apps Yet – Mobile friendly design and layouts
5-20ms Latency Penalty with E2EE – Encryption layers impact real-time collaboration (Signal’s is 8-12ms)
CA-CERT Monitoring – Required under Bill C-26 for abuse prevention, however E2EE is the way around this.
Bill C-26 mandates that operators of critical infrastructure (including telecoms, which is why SMS is no good) must allow government-mandated cybersecurity monitoring through the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CCCS), formerly known as the Canadian Cyber Incident Response Centre (CCIRC). Key implications for Anyone:
Incident Reporting: We’re required to report cyber incidents (e.g., ransomware attacks, data breaches) to CCCS within 24-72 hours of detection, we aim to do better while realistically big tech has taken months.
Compliance Audits: Government inspectors could demand access to systems/networks to verify security measures, but we can’t grant what we don’t have. E2EE will protect you beyond our encryption at rest.
Backdoor Access: While not explicitly stated, the bill’s information-sharing provisions (Clause 15.6) allow federal agencies to share data with foreign governments under certain conditions, but they can’t share what they can’t see. You’re safe.
